crappy wlan

okay, we all know wlan isnt the best of the best, but mine is really really bad!


connection:
my "normal" good connection hast 54mbit/s and 3 out of 5 conectivity bars.

but i am incrisingly having sucky internet.
sucky is 2-5mbit/s and only 2 out of 3 connectivity bars.


hardware:
the wlan router is a floor above me though its only about 3-5meters distance from my computer.

i use a fritz!wlan usb stick which should be able to handle up to 125mbit/s and a fromm our isp provided router and wlanrouter.

the router, which also has our phones and the wlanrouter connected to it is a "arcor starterbox dsl" its manufactured form saphairon and its the model "nt1plus - arcor2"
the wlan-router is a "arcor-dsl wlan-modem 100" and its form the manufacturer "zyxel". its the model "prestige 660hw-67" and has the manufacturing date 03.2005.

it has to be noted that we live in a crappy old house which was cheaply build (it was a barn once up on a time).


so, what do you guys think? any idea why my internet is so sucky?
btw, i had a low - mdeium connection during the last few hours jumping from 2mbit/s to 5,11 and 18mbit/s though it was mainly 2mbit/s with 3connectivity bars.
now all of a sudden its back up to 48 - 54mbit/s with three bars.

dsl & phonelines:
we have dsl2000 though we had dsl6000 which we had to cancell due to our phonelines not beeing able to carry the amount of information that was flowing and dying because of it, at least thats how the guy on the hotline was telling me a while back. please note, the guy wasnt ur standart hotline guy, he actually seeemed to have a clue of what he was talking about.


speedtest: (done at 54mbit/s with spikes of 48 down to 11 mbit/s)
i did a quick speedtest with utorrent and came up with this:

download: 3.53 mbit/s (432.0 kb/s)
upload: 576.71 mbit/s (70.3 kb/s)

can you not just get a big ethernet cable like ive got a 50 ft one i can send anyware round my home and connect directly to the hub you could send it out ye window sill drill a hole and pin it up the side of your house to the other floor like any house arials....
you could also just bye a very good wirless conecter areail with a very high db i think it is ..i had this problem long time ago with cheap wireless aireils .

..if u just have a usb stuck in the back of pc thats not very good realy you could just try a usb extention lead and keep the usb stick in high place were u get a better conection or even prop it just out side your window

...i use to be in to wirless and in the end i went out and got the best wirless ariel possable it also was pci connecter card that had 2.5 ghz built in to it with a 3 way ereai the boxes of these areils show how far they might recive and normly they show a house picture showing it will recive all round your home and garden .

but the better ones show a picture of a tower block building like a work place there the ones you want for massive towerblocks and work placesl i use to put the areial out side my window and the signels i was then getting was at max ...

..if you are a good d.i.y man you could make one from pringle tubes or even empty cans of dog food

..do you remeber the days of cb radio . same aplies realy we use to have areial in the loft for citizans band ..we would put the arial in the loft and sat it on a big metal sheet like the side plate of a cooker or any other sheet of metal as it need to be earthed .

under the sheet was rolls of tin foil in a cross shape reaching iver sides of the walls of the loft floor ....basickly you are creating a invisable dome that is earthing the main signel arial recevier.
the areil will bring incoming i think it is .
the metal base of any arial bit at bottom is basickly your out going the bigger you make this dome the better and farther it goes ,,,much like a satatlight dish with the needle areal in the middle and the outer metel dome ... in no way am i saying you should search for signals and use other peoples internet now that would be rong :)

EDIT: btw, i forgot to mention that i have the following problem too:

it happens almost once a day.
just out of nowhere our connection (mine, as well as the one on my mums laptop) just breaks down.
aka i am connected to the wlan box but its an areal connection only.

pulling the plug of the router which has the wlan box and the phones attached to it and putting it back in solves the problem.
maybe i should mention, that i dont restart the routers, the ip stays the same, all i do is pull the plug and put it back in.

to host wc3 games, download with utorrent at full capacity, etc i also have to do some port forwarding, aka enter my routers menue via mozilla or ie and open ports in the routers firewall for certain programms (utorrent, wc3) to pass through it unhindered.
it does not do that automatically and i think daniel or paul said, thats weird and i probably have a rather old router.

sounds like u just need a stronger arial thats all http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Highly-rated-Wi-Fire-High-Gain-USB-Wi-Fi-Antenna_W0QQitemZ230462057808QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _Computing_Networking_SM?hash=item35a89bed50 or somthing simler look for the high db strenth you can also get these with pci cards and the better ones will say gaming and surf and email .you do want the best to be onist you may also want to bye a better airel for the main hub ....you can bye this type of arial cable from your local electronic store and the fittings for the end ..but tell them what is for so they give you the right kind of cable for internet wirless arials ....any thing usb u can get usb extenter cables to put your usb stick in high space away from interferance ..i allways found that i get better signal with my arial out side as more packages were getting blocked inside the window or reciveing them at a slower rate ...emagen the house 1 outer wall ..but emagen how much more walls floors it has to get frew to get to your room on your floor ..so if u extend your usb and put the thing out side lol hope no one can reach it lol or trap it near your window it get signell there ......or just go d.i.y like i said build somet super silly hehe you might discover aliens lol

and no, a cable wont due, since its not my stick thats the problem, it has to be something else.
it doesnt matter, if im in my room, or if im standing 10cm away from the router, the connection still crashes.

mine crashes all the time, its just my fone line.. its so old..

if nothing else helps, id suggest getting ur home rewired
